Welcome to my legends.
These are a few of the tales I tell in the land called Urban Legends.

Every good story teller needs a muse. The one pictured above is called Lucy. She belongs to another extraordinary story teller who is sadly missed in the land of UL.

Looking Glass Tales

Looking Glass Tales

Under the sea and thru the looking glass shell, the little mermaid watched the scenes of life in the sea a hundred years in the future. Wishing that she could cavort with the friendly creatures she saw there, she sighed and wondered what they were. These smiling creature so full of play, mystified her. Long hours she sat switching her tail and laughing happy bubbles as she watched the joyous antics of the fishy looking ones.

One day, just by chance, she happened to be at the shell when the caretaker came to clean the glass. The caretaker, being a very busy person, didn't notice until it was too late that the mermaid had slipped under the glass and was thru to the other side. Scolding her for upsetting the balance, he demanded that she return at once to her side of the glass. With a flick of her tail and a happy smile, she looked at him over her shoulder as she swam away. Delighting in the freedom to follow the cheerful creatures she had spent so many hours watching, she was in awe of all the strange and wonderful new sights.

The creatures gathered round her and welcomed her to their group. Off they set to show their new friend all the wonders of their world. They swam beside her or ahead of her frolicking in the water. They showed her the old sunken cities and wrecked ships. They showed her the caves and the deep holes where even they didn't venture. They took her close to shore to see the great land cities there and the lonely cottages also.

Farther and farther away from the glass she swam. Soon, she came to a very lonely shore with a small cottage perched on a high crag of land that jutted out over the sea. She climbed onto an exposed rock to ook at the quaint home. There was a light shining in the window and a shadow was forming in it's glow. The shadow moved away from the window and a door openned. The shadow moved thru the doorway and out onto the cliff. As she wtched the shadow took on a shape, the shape was vaguely familiar to her. At least she could remember hearing tales of the other merpeople finding this type of creature in the sea.

The creature moved back into the cottage and soon the light went out. All was silent so she dove back into the water and went in search of her friends! Through the following days she thought about the cottage and the creature there. But as luck would have it she soon arrived back at the glass. She had wanted to avoid that area as much as she could because she didn't want to go back to her side of the glass.

This time her luck didn't hold out. For there by the glass was the caretaker and his minions waiting for her. They grabbed her and pulled her back to the right side of the glass. They told her she had upset the balance and would pay the price.

Day after day she sat by the glass looking at her friends on the other side. And day after day they ignored her as they swam together and played. She realized that her punishment was to always be on the outside looking in, to be the one who couldn't be seen.

When she had reached her lowest point, or at least she thought it was her saddest hour, a small miracle happened to her. As she lay weeping in the shell bottom, she felt something near her wiggling. Lost as she was in her misery she ignored the little creature that snuggled close to her. Finally, thru her teary eyes, she saw a little creature smiling up at her. Instantly, she thought the glass was gone and one of her friends had slipped thru to see her. But when she checked the glass with her hand it was intacted.

She was overjoyed to see the small creature and together they played and played. Until the caretaker came to her one day and told her what had really happened to her.

The caretaker said the baby creature had to go back to it's side of the glass. Sadly, it waved good-bye to the mermaid with it's tiny flipper and slipped thru the glass that the caretaker had moved aside. And as she stood leaning against the glass watching, the caretaker thanked her for letting her baby go to the other side and helping keep the seal population going strong. Wide-eyed with wonder and the final realization that she had given birth to the little creature, she asked the caretaker why this had happened to her. His reply was that only the strongest and bravest could survive on the other side so only the strongest and the bravest would be let thru the looking glass and that now that she had proven herself she would be allowed to returned so the seals would continue to have only the strongest and bravest pups.

Overjoyed, she begged the caretaker to let her return
to the other side. As he slide the glass aside for her to go thru he admonished her to be careful of the two legged creatures and to come back to the glass soon. Waving goodbye to him and promising to be back, she swam away with the idea of looking for that cottage again. But that is a tale for another day.
